I just had a dreadfull weekend. We estimated this work at around 1.995 Euro and a three week deadline. The client requested we do it for 1.496 Euro and in 5 days.
Worked friday all day, Staurday, like a slave, sunday — didn’t stop. I didn’t sleep sunday, and ended up in bed aroud 7 a.m. Monday for a quick nap and then back to work until now, it’s now tuesday, 5:23 am GMT… I am now uploading the huge AVI animations, which should go on for a couple more hours… I’m probably not going to be before seven again.
Hence my title: why sleep, when you can work?
Yes, believe me it’s reaaaaally fun! My eyes can barely keep open and hurt, I’ve eaten so much radiation from my monitor that all my kids will turn out to be some sort of mutant super-heroes… all for the money, of course :)
On the brighter side I might finally be going to see “The Matrix” on Saturday (if I’m still alive)… I hope it’s as good as it seems.
Firstly, it has been my birthday, I turned 26 on friday the 11th. It was great. I got my first toy in ages! Yes! My parents bought me a Qui-Gon Jinn light sabre! It’s great, it has sound effects and all, I loved it.
I got a bunch of presents, and managed to cram 16 people into my tiny 4 by 3 metre living room singing “happy birthday”. There was a musical jam in my music room and everything went fine except that Quake 3 isn’t working any more, I have no idea why.
Then, yesterday, it was election day. We voted to elect 25 representatives for the European parliament. There was an apalling 60% people who didn’t bother to vote.
I voted for the Socialist party again, they won. Funny thing is, every party came out to say they’d won. Everyone won! Which ispired me for my political strip for this week, obviously. In my country no party ever looses an election, which is really funny, to say the least.
Well, I am older now, and wiser, of course. 26… on step closer to 30. I wonder what it’s like to be 30? I hear women have their sexual peak at 30… but, what can we blokes expect of it (I mean, besides being married to a 30-year-old-sexual-peaking-woman?)
Today I upgraded our internet account to take advantage of mySQL databases.
It obviously coincided with the fact of my introduction to the wonderful world of mySQL. So I’ll be in charge of mySQL and it seems pretty easy up to now. We’ll need to use mySQL for a new client we’re trying to “catch”.
Oh, my Amazon.co.uk order arrived today… you gotta love ordering stuff from the UK. Now I’m the proud owner of “Programming Perl” by Larry Wall et al, the reference book for any aspiring Perl programmer such as myself. The order also contained “The Art of Stretchig and Kicking” by James Lew. It’s a kung fu book, divided in two parts: stretching and kicking (obvious isn’t it?). I’m especially interested in the stretching part as I’ve been noticing a severe loss in mobility lately. I cannot reach my toes with my fingers while keeping my legs stretched anymore… not by a long shot since I can barely bend at the waist.
I decided to start a daily practice of stretching exercises to help me overcome this problem and this book is exactly what I expected it to be, with the added bonus that, if I can master the stretching exercises I can then proceed to learn how to basically kick ass in any given way… with extreme prejudice :)
Late last night I joined the Seti@home project. It’s really rather cool, although most of it was totally incomprehensible for me at the beginning.
I’ve read some FAQs since then and now I vaguely understand what’s going on when I download a chunk of radiotelescope data for my CPU to analyze. Anyone can participate, actually, there already 500.000 participants in over 200 countries who’ve already contributed over 1600 years of processing. You can joun in on the program wether you have a Windows based PC, a Mac, a UNIX, Solaris or Linux machine, you name it check it out here: Seti@home.
Tomorrow there’ll be a European boycott to fixed telecommunications. Especially, we should refrain from connecting to the internet and using our phone lines for any other reason. The idea is that the telecom companies are overcharging to take advantage of the ever growing number of internet users. Also we want flat rates like the ones in the USA, meaning we shouldn’t be charged by the minute for phone calls, we should just be charged a fee for every call and that’s it.
Learn more about the strugle of European telecom users for better services and lower rates here: Telecom Strikes.
Today I went to meet with my attorney and friend and incredible mexican gunman for lunch. We had some gigantic veal steaks and talked about business… yes… business, because we’re very successful young business men.
Oh well… we finally talked about turning our company name into a registered brand and also registering our comics and characters, which is way past due and is going to be done now, before someone starts to use our stuff abusevely.
We also talked about building a lawyer site for him with some interesting challenges for us, especially in what comes to Perl programming.
By the way I recently ordered “Programming Perl” from Amazon, it should be here any day now.
